What Are White Spots?
In dentistry, these are referred to as “white spot lesions.” They appear as opaque, chalky marks on the teeth and are typically caused by:
- Decalcification following the removal of orthodontic braces
- Fluorosis (excessive fluoride exposure during tooth development)
- Early stages of enamel demineralization
Previously, treating these spots meant drilling the affected area and covering it with composite resin or a veneer. Today, we utilize a more conservative, evidence-based approach.
The Icon Resin Infiltration System
We treat these lesions using the Icon Resin Infiltration method—a procedure that requires no drilling and no injections.
Instead of removing the tooth surface, we apply a specialized etching agent (using hydrochloric acid) that gently opens the microscopic pores of the white spot lesion. We then apply a fluid, light-curing resin that penetrates deeply into this porous enamel. Once cured, the resin mimics the optical properties of your natural tooth, making the white spot blend seamlessly with the surrounding enamel. The entire process is typically completed in a single visit.
