A dental emergency can happen at the worst possible time.

You may suddenly develop severe tooth pain, lose a crown, break a mouthpiece, or experience swelling or inflammation while living in or traveling through Tokyo.

For an international patient, the problem can become even more stressful when you are unsure where to go or whether you can explain your symptoms in English.

At PreBeau Oral Care in Akasaka, Tokyo, we provide private dental emergency care for English-speaking residents and visitors.

What can be treated as a dental emergency?

Not every dental emergency requires the same treatment.

Depending on the condition, an urgent dental visit may involve:

• severe tooth pain;
• suspected dental infection;
• inflammation;
• a loose crown;
• a displaced or damaged restoration;
• a broken mouthpiece or retainer;
• significant dental discomfort.

Our first objective is to assess the situation and determine what can safely be done at that visit.

The goal is not always definitive treatment on the first visit

This is an important point.

When a patient comes to us with severe pain or inflammation, the immediate priority may be to stabilize the situation and reduce symptoms.

Depending on the diagnosis, this may include appropriate medication, temporary measures, or other urgent treatment.

If a crown has come off, we may be able to reposition it when the condition of the tooth and restoration makes that clinically appropriate.

If a retainer or mouthpiece is damaged, we can assess the appliance and discuss repair or replacement options.

The appropriate treatment depends on the individual clinical situation.

We do not promise that every restoration can be re-cemented or every appliance can be repaired. The tooth, restoration, fit, material and surrounding tissues must first be evaluated.

What about severe pain?

Acute dental pain should not simply be ignored.

The American Dental Association has published evidence-based guidelines addressing the management of acute dental pain in adolescents and adults.

The appropriate approach depends on the cause of the pain.

A toothache can result from different conditions, including inflammation of the dental pulp, infection, trauma, or other dental problems.

Pain relief alone does not necessarily solve the underlying problem.

That is why diagnosis comes first.

When should you seek hospital-level emergency care?

A dental clinic is not a substitute for a hospital emergency department when a patient has a potentially serious systemic emergency.

If you have severe facial swelling, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, rapidly progressing symptoms, or other signs of a serious medical emergency, urgent medical attention may be necessary.

The Japan National Tourism Organization provides guidance for foreign visitors on how to find medical institutions according to language, specialty and urgency.

Why English communication matters during an emergency

When you are in pain, communication becomes even more important.

We need to understand:

• what happened;
• when it happened;
• your level of pain;
• previous treatment;
• allergies;
• medications;
• relevant medical conditions;
• what restoration or appliance was involved.
